Pension Insurer is $26 Billion in the Red

BOSTON (MainStreet) — The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. — which insures the benefits of 25,000 private-sector pension plans covering about 34 million U.S. workers and retirees — announced Tuesday that its annual deficit increased to $ 26 billion as of Sept. 30, a $ 3 billion increase from its previous fiscal year.

It’s the largest year-end deficit in PBGC’s 37-year history. Factors that contributed to the worsening numbers included lower interest rates used to measure benefit payment obligations and anticipated increases in multiemployer financial assistance.
