Clorox Q2 Earnings Rise; Sales Outlook Lifted (CLX)

Consumer products maker The Clorox Company (CLX) on Friday posted a sharp uptick in fiscal second quarter earnings and raised its full-year sales guidance.

The Oakland, CA-based company reported second quarter net income of $ 105 million, or 79 cents per share, compared with $ 21 million, or 15 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Last year’s results were hampered by one-time charges.

On average, Wall Street analysts expected a smaller profit of 68 cents per share, although that total may not compare with CLX’s reported results.

Revenue rose 3% from last year to $ 1.22 billion. On average, Wall Street analysts expected slightly lower revenue of $ 1.2 billion.

Looking ahead, Clorox said it still expects full-year 2012 earnings to range from $ 4 to $ 4.10 per share, while analysts are looking for $ 4.07 per share for the year. CLX did, however, boost its 2012 revenue outlook to a 2% to 4% growth range, up from 1% to 3% previously.

These High-Tech Stocks Could Soon Become Great Dividend Stocks

In the past few years, I've continually marveled at the stunning piles of cash parked on the balance sheets of many high-tech firms. These companies had been holding lots of cash to stay strong in case industry conditions waned. But even with the sharp economic blows of 2008 and 2009, their cash piles just kept growing. They've been saving for a rainy day that's likely to never arrive.

I've also been noting how these companies could boost shares by committing much of that cash to stock buybacks. Yet software giant CA Technologies. (NYSE: CA) may have upended that theory. In late January, the company announced plans to super-size its dividend, from $ 0.20 a year to $ 1 a year. The dividend yield suddenly shot up from 1% to more than 4%.

CA can surely afford the higher dividend. The $ 500 million a year it now plans to spend on dividends still keeps the payout ratio, in relation to free cash flow, at around 32% (according to analyst at Evercore Partners), while the company's $ 1.25 billion net cash position remains intact. Whatever cash flow doesn't go toward the dividend will be used for stock buybacks and acquisitions, according to management. You have to applaud any company that takes proactive steps to utilize a strong balance sheet and reward shareholders in the process.

A Comparison Of Value Between AT&T And Verizon

By Henry Stokman:

AT&T (T) recently announced that it would be raising the prices on current data plans that it offers. I hear this and wonder if this move is good or bad for the stock. I soon realize that has to be good because when it comes to smartphones or tablets there really are still only two choices with reasonable coverage, Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T). Verizon is an excellent company and has shown significant stock appreciation in the past year, especially since it has been able to start selling Apple (AAPL) products.

AT&T on the other hand has really not shown the same appreciation in price that Verizon has, even though it too is selling the same Apple products. AT&T this past quarter was denied the ability by the U.S. Government to buy T-Mobile for $ 39 Billion. Some see this as a serious blow to the company and its future, but
