How to Save Money on Entertainment and Spend Less Than The Average Household

Post image for How to Save Money on Entertainment and Spend Less Than The Average Household

Looking to have some fun without burning a hole in your wallet? Look no further. Here are some great ways you can save money on entertainment. What’s your favorite?

Average Entertainment Spending

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010, the average American consumer unit spent $ 2,504 on “entertainment.” If you include “food away from home” as entertainment (like we do in our household), that adds another $ 2,505 of spending. Altogether, the average American consumer unit spent $ 5,009 on what we consider to be “entertainment.”

You might be wondering what what a “consumer unit” is. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes it as “families, single persons living alone or sharing a household with others but who are financially independent, or two or more persons living together who share expenses.”

Without getting into our financial details, I can tell you that our family entertainment budget is significantly lower than the average American household. How about yours?

5 Tools for Teaching Your Kids to Save Money

Post image for 5 Tools for Teaching Your Kids to Save Money

All children are different. My six children may all look the same on the outside, but on the inside they all march to the beat of a different drum. I have naturally hard workers, and I have those we trained to work. I have a son who breathes music, and I have another son that needed his music lessons.

Likewise, I have a few who squirrel away every penny they get and a few whose pennies slip right between their fingers. Yet as a parent, you want to do your best to train your children to have positive character qualities—and saving money is one of them. Here are 5 tools for teaching your kids to save money.

1. Commission – not allowance.

We have never given our children an allowance. We teach them that everyone in the family does a part to make the family succeed; whether that is washing the dishes, mowing the lawn, or helping with the family business. I believe that when children are given everything they ask for they tend to grow up expecting life to give them everything they want. That is not reality. Once a child’s regular schoolwork and chores are done, we have a list of extra jobs he can choose from for a commission. That list would include things that go above and beyond what is normally expected.

Another way we’ve taught our children to earn is to foster an entrepreneurial spirit in them. From the time our oldest was little, my husband taught him to scrap metal. He would save pop cans, electric cords from discarded appliances, and old window frames and take them to the scrap yard at the end of the month. He did this until he reached his teenage years and secured a “real job.” Then the scrap business passed down to the next boy. Besides scrapping, our kids have sold crafts, mowed lawns, baked bread, decorated cakes, sold eggs, and done general handyman work to earn money.

Manilla Review: An Easy Way to Manage Your Bills

Post image for Manilla Review: An Easy Way to Manage Your Bills

Take a look around your desk.  How many bills or account statements are sitting around?  Even if you answered ‘zero,’ you probably get a lot of your statements via email, right?

Most of my statements are sent via email too, but they still seem to clutter up my email account.  The frustrating part is that I normally hit ‘delete’ or ‘archive’ so when I need to find a statement, it takes a while to search through my email.  Sure, I could log in online to download the statement, but wouldn’t it be easy if there were a sort of ‘online’ filing cabinet to store your e-statements?  There is, and it’s called Manilla.

What is Manilla?

Manilla is a free online tool that helps keep your bills and other statements organized.  When you create your Manilla profile, you’re able to sync up with over 1,300 providers to manage your phone, cable, credit card, bank, investment, and many other kinds of statements all in one place.

Reader Question: What should I do with my old 401k? | Roundup

I got a question from a reader the other day that is a pretty common one (what to do with your old 401k), so I decided to answer it as a blog post today. Here is her question:

Hi Bob, I have a 401k with my old job and my new job does not offer a 401k option (or else I would just roll my 401k over). What should I do with this 401k?  Leave it alone?  Roll it over into a Roth IRA?  (What are the tax implications if I were to do this?)  Roll it over into some other entity that I am not aware of?

I don’t know if a little background info matters but…, I started this 401k when I was 20, stopped depositing money into it when I quit my job at 30 (I quit to stay home with my baby for a year) and now I’m back to work but just part time. So what should I do?

What I did with my old 401k

I will tell you what I did. I rolled my old 401k into a Traditional IRA at Zecco and then converted it to a Roth IRA.  And the primary reason I did so is because when the money is in an IRA (roth or traditional) you have about a million investment options vs. a 401k that often only has 10-20 different options. As if that weren’t enough, 401k fees are often a lot higher than IRA fees, which will cut a big chunk out of your earnings over 30 years.

How to Decide Whether to Rent or Own a Home

Post image for How to Decide Whether to Rent or Own a Home

The last four years have really been an uncertain time for homeowners who had to watch the value of their home take a very unpleasant roller coaster ride.  For those just entering the market, it makes you really question whether or not you want to commit to spending so much money on a home that may lose value.  On the other hand, you might have put off buying a home for a while and now you can purchase the home of your dreams at a fraction of what you expected to pay four years ago.

Renting or Owning a Home: Many Factors to Consider!

The question of renting vs. buying a home is one that my wife and I worked through a couple years back.  The decision to rent or buy a home really depends on a variety of factors, so hopefully these points will help you to decide whether to rent or own a home.

Viewing Housing as an Expense

Before we cover any of the pros and cons of renting vs. buying, it’s important to recognize that your house payment is an expense.  Sure, the home might go up in value and yes you will probably build up equity in your home, but there is no guarantee.

How to Find a Good Babysitter

Post image for How to Find a Good Babysitter

If you have children—or plan to in the future—this is probably a topic you’ve given a good deal of thought to. It’s a bit of a dilemma because although you as the parent are best qualified to take care of your own children, you still need some time away from your children, at least occasionally. Or maybe more frequently.

That makes the selection of a babysitter one of the most important decisions you can make regarding your children. Under the best of circumstances, you want someone caring for your children who you can trust, who will be available on a regular basis, and who won’t cost too much. How do you find a good babysitter?

Find a Good Babysitter: 4 Ways

1. The Family Option

Family is usually the first, best place to find a reliable sitter. Grandparents often consider having their grandkids over to be a special event, and aunts and uncles may view it in much the same way.

How Free Computer Software Can Help You With Your Prayer Life

Post image for How Free Computer Software Can Help You With Your Prayer Life

I do not claim to be an expert on prayer, nor do I imply that my own prayer life is without flaw. However, because my prayer life seems to be a bit unique, my hope is that some of the tips I offer here will help others.

Here is the deal: I have learned over the years that I need help in maintaining a regular and meaningful prayer life, and it turns out that much of that help is computer related. You too can use free computer software (or software you already own) to help you with your prayer life. Allow me to explain.

Typing Out Prayers

If you are like me, your mind drifts when you go to your quiet place for your time with God. You may start out charging the very gates of heaven, but then, for no apparent reason, you discover yourself wondering what you will be eating for supper or how your favorite sports team fared last night. I have found that I will stay much more focused if I type my prayers instead of thinking them.

My daily prayer time starts with a word processing document and a macro which outlines my prayer categories: Thanksgiving, Praise, Confession, Intercession and Petition. Sound overly mechanical? I say give it a try. If typing your prayers is not for you, you can always go back to what you were doing before.
